After years of waiting,Jason Bournefans finally got the news they wanted last year, when Universal Pictures confirmed that bothMatt Damonand directorPaul Greengrassare reuniting for a newBourne Sequel. Production is currently under way, butMatt Damontook some time out from filming to promote his new sci-fi dramaThe Martian, arriving in theaters October 2. During an interview withNew York Daily News, the actor offered some new plot details that reveal how this story came together.
“[Bourne] has his memory back, but that doesn’t mean he knows everything. It’s 12 years since Jason Bourne has been on the grid. So we have to answer the questions, Where’s he been? What’s he doing? What gets him going again? So once we solved all that, then we had a movie.”
When the movie debuts next year, it will have been nine years since Bourne got his memory back in 2007’sThe Bourne Ultimatum. It isn’t known if there is any significance to the actor revealing that it’s been “12 years” since Bourne was “on the grid,” but it’s possible this sequel is set a few years after 2016. It’s also possible that he was referring to the first movie, 2002’sThe Bourne Identity, but it’s been 13 years since that hit theaters.
