The Golden Globe Awardsnominations have brought the usual gripes of snubs and surprises, but in the middle of these, there is a new category that is looking to quash the annual complaints about popular movies missing out on nominations from “snooty” awards panels. This has allowed Marvel Studios’ box office juggernautDeadpool & Wolverineto sneak itself a place in nominations, but it has some tough competition from ghosts, witches, aliens, and more.

TheBest Cinematic and Box Office Achievementcategory has been created as one of two honors new to the awards this year, and it includes films that have achieved significant box office success and widespread audience acclaim. To qualify, a film must have grossed at least $150 million worldwide, with a minimum of $100 million from the U.S. market, or have achieved comparable digital streaming viewership.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine.

This has, of course, opened up the way for Marvel Studios to sweep in withDeadpool & Wolverine, which made significantly more than that at the box office with its $1.6 billion haul worldwide. However, this is not going to be a walk in the multiverse park for the MCU’s saviors. While there is no doubt that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s team-up movie, with all its cameos and multiversal shenanigans, set the box office alight, it is not the only big movie up for the award, and it will take more than a banging soundtrack and witty one-liners to win the day this time.

Who is Up Against ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ at the Golden Globes?

While there are times that a superhero movie with the reputation ofDeadpool & Wolverinewould be a given for any popular award – and it will doubtlessly win many in the coming months – the biggest competition for Marvel’s dynamic duo comes in the form of another fantastical pairing – Glinda and Elphaba fromWicked.

The movie musical has taken the box office by storm in the last few weeks, shattering records and breaking a losing streak of Broadway adaptations. The film has also secured several other nominations in the existing categories of Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress – Musical or Comedy (Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress – Musical or Comedy (Ariana Grande). The first part of Jon M. Chu’s musical extravaganza (who, as director, somehow failed to be nominated) has been a runaway success, and in many popular votes, it is going to be a formidable opponent.

The Ending of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Was Saved by an Unexpected Source

The MCU sequel ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ almost ended on an underwhelming note.

Adding to the competition isBeetlejuice Beetlejuice, the belated sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic, and one that received its fair share of love from audiences back in September. Other nominees includeAlien: Romulus, Gladiator II, Inside Out 2, Twisters, andThe Wild Robot, each bringing their own big box office totals and plenty of praise from audiences. Exactly who will win this battle is one that is almost impossible to call, but it does once again highlight this year’s sequel obsession with only two of the eight nominations not being follow up movies. you may see the list of nominations in the category below.
