Every time directorMichael Baygoes to make a newTransformersmovie, he claims it will be his last. He stated this before directing 2011’sTransformers: Dark of the Moon. And then, he made the same claim after eventually agreeing to direct 2014’sTransformers: Age of Extinction. Today, has confirmed that he will once again reluctantly return to directTransformers 5. And, true to form, he claims it will be his last. But will it really? During an interview with Rolling Stone, the director solidified his involvement inTransformers 5, adding that he’s definitely ready to move on from the blockbuster franchise.

“I’m doingTransformers… 5, is it? I’ve taken on a lot of work.Transformers, I still have a great time. It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else.J.J. [Abrams]told me, ‘You’re the only guy that could do this.’ But it’s time to move on. One more.”

Last spring, it was revealed that Paramount and Hasbro were putting together awriters room, lead byAkiva Goldsman, with a group of writers coming up with ideas forTransformers 5, along with future spinoffs and sequels. The writers room also includedSteven S. DeKnight(Daredevil),Robert Kirkman(The Walking Dead),Art Marcum&Matt Holloway(Iron Man),Zak Penn(Pacific Rim 2),Jeff Pinkner(The Amazing Spider-Man 2),Andrew BarrerandGabriel Ferrari(Ant-Man),Christina Hodson,Lindsey Beers,Ken NolanandGeneva Robertson-Dorsett.Michael Bayhelped oversee the writers room, along withSteven Spielberg, Hasbro’sBrian Goldnerand producersLorenzo di Bonaventuraand Mark Vahradian and Don Murphy.

Akiva Goldsmanwas originally set to write the script forTransformers 5, with a report from September revealing that production will begin this June. However, back in November, Paramount and Hasbro formed a new writers room forG.I. Joe 3andMicronauts, lead byAkiva Goldsman, which means he won’t be available to writeTransformers 5.Ken Nolanand the writing team ofArt Marcum&Matt Hollowaywill now take over the writing duties onTransformers 5.Transformers: Age of ExtinctionstarMark Wahlbergis returning to reprise his role as Cade Yeager, but it isn’t known ifNicola PeltzandJack Reynorwill be back as Cade’s daughter Tessa, and her boyfriend Shane Dyson. There has also been a rumor thatTransformers 5will be the last movie featuringOptimus Prime.

Hasbroalso recently confirmed thatTransformers 6,Transformers 7andTransformers 8are happening, but no concrete release details were given. We also know that another project developed in the writers room is an animated spinoff calledCybertron, written byAnt-ManwritersAndrew Barrer&Gabriel Ferrari.
