The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 actually beat Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Star Wars: The Force Awakens in the greatComic-Con Twitter Warsof 2015. And we haven’t even seen the exclusive trailer that was shown inHall Hlast Thursday.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 gets a little bump in excitement for being thefinal installmentof the franchise (though more sequels may happen). It’s clear that those using their social media platforms during the big event gravitated towards Katniss and her struggle to overtake D13 and assassinate President Snow. Twitter officially released their analytics, which solidify exactly which major film and TV properties where most talked about amongst peer-to-peer groups. And the results may surprises you. Especially when it comes to most popular male celebrity.
Comic-Con 2015 manages to generated an astounding 2.9 million tweets. And they were all aimed at some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises ever created. Before the event, it was speculated thatStar Wars: The Force Awakensand its various spinoffs would reach a close tie with Warner Bros.' DC Comics presentation. And while they ran neck and neck throughout the weekend, it wasJennifer Lawrenceand her motley crew who proved to hold sway over the nerds and geeks at the San Diego convention center. And it was the fangirls, not the fanboys, who drove this conversation.
On the TV side of things, Once Upon a Time was the most popular. It surprisingly took the lead over extremely popular superhero seriesArrow. And its DC Comics sister showThe Flashdidn’t even make the list. Television also seemed to be ruled by the female demographic, withSupernatural,The Vampire DiariesandTeen Wolfall driving a strong social media conversation. One that you might not here in mainstream television reporting.
Possibly the most surprising aspect of this whole Twitter War was how weak theStar Wars: The Force Awakensconversation turned out to be, considering it went into SDCC with strong word of mouth and two very strong trailers. It didn’t seem to matter that the entire cast arrived to talk about the experience of returning to thisgalaxy far, far away. EvenHarrison Fordgot in on the fun, with new footage shown during a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel that was made available to everyone immediately following the panel in Hall H. While there is certainly enthusiasm surrounding the sequel, it seems a lot of fans are taking a ‘let’s wait and see’ attitude about the whole endevor.
While Star Wars is just getting started with its new trilogy and a series ofAnthology movies, there is more of an immediacy surrounding The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 due to its finality as a franchise. But it must be noted that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 had a 24 hour head start on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which may be one of the reasons it beat the DC Comics movie in the conversation.
