While not nearly as big asSan Diego Comic-Con, The Chicago Wizard World Comic Con does respectable enough business and is known for pulling in some stellar talent. The convention has continued on throughout the weekend, where some choicerumorshave flown forth. Among the many celebrity guests wereArrowstarStephen Amell,Star TreklegendWilliam Shatner, andFireflycaptainNathan Fillion, just to name a few. And while you’ll be hearing some more interesting news coming forth in the hours and days ahead, as journalists pick through their short interviews for news worthy tidbits, one of the coolest moments came whenNathan Fillionrevealed which DC Comics superhero he desperately wants to play. And it sounds like a perfect fit.
It seems like everyone in Hollywood is lobbying for asuperhero gignowadays. FromRonda Rouseypimpingfan artof herself inCaptain Marvel’s iconic costume, toTyrese Gibsonall but convincing himself that he really is starring inGreen Lantern Corps.(neither are signed at the moment). Big budgetMarvel and DC moviesare getting all the attention, and so are the number of stars who go out of their way to clamor for any obscure character they can land. And the guyNathan Fillionwants to play is pretty obscure, at least to mainstream audiences.
While holding down a panel at Chicago Wizard World Comic Con, an audience member stood up and askedNathan Fillionthe go to question for celebrities here in the late teens. ‘If you could play any hero from the DC or Marvel Universe, who would it be?’ Knowing that this question is inevitably coming, all actors worth their iodine free sea salt already have their answer planned out well in advanced.Nathan Fillionwas not the exception, as he rattled off his answer in machine gun fashion, withComicBook.comthere to capture his quote in full.
“I think I could take a pretty good crack at Booster Gold. That’s kind of my niche: show-offy, vain… I think I could handle that. Not too bright. I think Ambush Bug - you like that? A little bit off his rocker, you’d never see my face. But I think Greatest American Hero is due for a reboot.”
Interesting. He would most like to play Booster Gold, but he’s also a fan of Ambush Bug and Greatest American Hero. These are all characters that we’d like to seeNathan Fillionplay. The Greatest American Heroreboot is already being planned by the directors ofThe Lego Movie. It will be an hour-long superhero drama, which may countNathan Fillionout of the running, as he’s still going strong on ABC’sCastle. Though, some speculate thatCastle Season 8will bring that show to a close.
There are no talks at DC to bring Booster Gold to the big screen any time soon. The character has flown under the radar, though he has appeared on such animated shows asJustice League Unlimited,Batman: The Brave and The BoldandLegion of Super-Heroes. Created by comic book legend Dan Jergens, the character, whose real name is Michael Jon Carter, was first introduced in 25th Century Gotham City, but later moved to 20th century Metropolis. He is a career superhero who holds down movie deals and endorsement contracts. His one live-action appearance to date came on an episode ofSmallville. At one point, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, the power team behindArrow,The FlashandSupergirl, were putting together a Booster Gold series for Syfy. That, as I’m sure you know, didn’t end up moving forward.
IfCastledoes call it closed after this season, it’s possible thatNathan Fillionwill appear on a superhero series sometime in the future. It’s not even beyond the realm of possibility to see him show up as Booster Gold onArroworThe Flash. The character fits well with his beloved persona. But does he have what it takes to be a superhero on the big screen? Who knows! But we’re sure to see him play another superhero at some point, after having voiced several animated DC Comics projects and originating the superhero The Holy Avenger in 2011’sSuper.
