Another beloved animated series from the shared childhoods of those of a certain age is now getting the live-action treatment courtesy ofNetflix. Following in the footsteps of theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers,and others, the popular streamer will be hoping not to destroy the legacy and thus ruin said childhoods as it transforms this depressingly topical animated show into live-action.
As per a report by Deadline, Netflix has now won the rights to turn the 1990 showCaptain Planet and the Planeteersinto a live-action series. This comes following a storied development during which time the ‘90s animated show was at various times set up at Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Discovery, withTop Gun: MaverickandThe Running ManstarGlen Powell often attachedto play the titular world-saving superhero.

The live-actionCaptain Planeteffort has now landed at the door of Netflix, who, alongside Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Warner Bros. Television, will takethe environmentally concerned seriesfrom animation to real-life. According to the report,Mrs. Davisco-creator/executive producer Tara Hernandez, who is also known for writing and producingThe Big Bang Theoryand its spin-offYoung Sheldon, will write the adaptation.

“I’m very, very passionate about ‘Captain Planet.’ I want that one to get made. And I feel like we have a very, very strong way into that world and something that I think the world wants to see, but the people that own that property have other ideas and other plans, and that’s fine. Look, I’ll just keep making movies and keep doing what I’m going to do, and eventually, we’ll see if that ever comes back around. But at the end of the day, it’s out of your control.”
