Recent rumors are apparently true. We are getting a whole new backstory for iconic slasherJason Voorheesin the upcomingFriday the 13thremake. And his often talked about, but never seen on the big screen daddy Elias is coming along for the ride. But that’s not all, Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s Mom who did all the killing in the 1980 original, will be back, and we’ll get to see a new side of her as well. It sounds like this newFriday the 13this shaping up to be a real family affair.
The next installment of the Jason saga is coming from the same team responsible for the previous remake, which landed in 2009 with a loud thud. Fans seemed quite indifferent about the whole thing. This weekend, the same producers, working under their Platinum Dunes banner, haveTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadowsin theaters. And producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been on the press circuit. They both confirmed that this nextFridaywill be a family reunion of sorts. And it is giving us a side of the Voorhees family we’ve never seen before. Brad Fuller had this to say toYahoo.
“We’re going to go back and we’re going to meet that family. We’re going to meet the family. You’re gonna meet Pamela, Elias, and Jason. And you’re gonna see how it all happened.”
It was just last week thatFullerhad dropped the info about Jason’s neworigin story. In the 1980 original, we learned that Jason drowned while the counselors atCamp Crystal Lakewere other wise preoccupied. We’re not sure how Jason’s life will change this time out, but Fuller did offer this.
“You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward. But it’s an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamela’s there, but it’s a little bit different from what you’ve seen before.”
We’d previously heard that this newFriday the 13thwould be found footage, it would take place in the snow, and it would feature anew killerdifferent than Jason. These were all remarks made by the producers over the past couple of years. And it seems like they throw some of this stuff out in the open just to see how fans react. Everything mentioned has since been canceled for this reboot. And now it appears they are moving in an entirely new direction. One that will give us a glimpse into Jason’s early years. It’s the same approach thatThe Texas Chainsaw Massacreis taking withLeatherface, which gives us the lowdown on that killer’s long-forgotten teenage years. Yes, we could be entering into an era of slasher coming-of-age stories.
While we have never seenJason’s DadElias on screen in any of the previousFriday the 13thmovies, the character has been referenced in the past. The original ending ofFriday the 13th Part VI: Jason Livesfeatured Elias visiting the empty grave of his son, but it wasn’t used in the theatrical cut. Elias is also referenced inJason Goes To Hell, which reveals Jason’s half-sister, Elias' daughter, and he was also featured inFriday the 13th: Pamela’s Tale, a comic book that revealed Jason’s mother Pamela Voorhees murdered him because of his abusive nature.
