Warner Bros. announced today that they are distributing a newUntitled Moviefrom heralded filmmakerChristopher Nolan, handing out a July 21, 2017release datefor the mystery project. The movie will go up against Universal’sPitch Perfect 3and an untitled animated movie from 20th Century Fox, DreamWorks Animation and BlueSky Studios. The project will also come just one week after 20th Century Fox’sWar of the Planet of the Apeson Jun 09, 2025 and a week before Sony and Marvel’sSpider-Manreboot on June 25, 2025.

No plot details have been given at this time, but this deal continuesChristopher Nolan’s long tradition of working with Warner Bros. The studio has had a hand in all of the filmmaker’s movies since 2002’sInsomnia, including the blockbusterBatmantrilogyBatman Begins(2005),The Dark Knight(2008) andThe Dark Knight Rises, and the 2010 hitInception. Warner Bros. also co-distributed the filmmaker’sThe Prestigewith Disney’s Buena Vista Pictures, and they shared distribution with Paramount on his last film,Interstellar.

WithInterstellar, Warner Bros. split production costs with Paramount, with the former handling international distribution and the latter handling domestic distribution. Warner Bros. got the better end out of that deal, withInterstellartaking in $188 million domestically and $487 million internationally. On this new project, though, Warner Bros. has retained global distribution rights. The studio hasn’t announced when production may begin, or when we may hear the first casting news.

The news couldn’t come at a better time for Warner Bros., which is coming off a disappointing summer at thebox office. WhileMad Max: Fury RoadandSan Andreasperformed well for the studio, they suffered a string of bombs throughout the rest of the summer, includingHot Pursuit($34 million domestic, $35 million budget),Entourage($32 million domestic, $30 million budget) andThe Man from U.N.C.L.E.($40 million domestic, $75 million budget). Other movies likeMagic Mike XXL,VacationandWe Are Your Friendsall underperformed as well, during their theatrical runs.

It isn’t known ifChristopher Nolanwrote the script with his brother and frequent collaboratorJonathan Nolan, who co-wroteInterstellar,The Dark Knight Rises,The Dark KnightandThe Prestige. A newChristopher Nolanfilm is certainly exciting news, but without any story details, we’ll have to wait and see what subject the filmmaker will tackle next. The filmmaker’s stories are always so wildly different from the last, so we’ll have to wait and see what subject matter he tackles in his 2017 film.
