Brad Pitthas been making the rounds to promote his new Formula One movie,F1, but as that project crosses the finish line, he is gearing up for another. He recently shared new details about David Fincher’sOnce Upon a Time… in Hollywoodfollow-up movie atNetflix, in which he will reprise his role as Cliff Booth. He offered some clarification aboutQuentin Tarantino’s involvement with the feature, how it should be categorized, and when production is expected to start. It turns out, cameras will start rolling… in Hollywood very soon.
Pitt, who starred in Tarantino’s 2019 comedy-drama film,Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, as Cliff Booth, the longtime friend and stunt double of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton, is set to headline the follow-up film at Netflix, reportedly titledThe Adventures of Cliff Booth. Finchersigned on to helm the projectin April, with approval from Tarantino, who penned the script — but the announcement is one that took many by surprise. Pitt has now offered some clarification on how the filmmaker switch-up came about, telling Deadline it was by choice:

“This is something Quentin Tarantino wrote. It’s an episode, not really a sequel, but an episode of the character fromOnce Upon a Time. He didn’t want to direct it at this point, so our mutual friend David Fincher stepped in.”
Quentin Tarantino and His Drive to Change History
Quentin Tarantino’s movies are works of extreme and entertaining fiction. But a few times, he has completely changed history.
The Adventures of Cliff Booth, which is set up at Netflix where Fincher has a first-look deal, is now confirmed to be a spin-off, rather than a direct sequel continuing the story of the original film. Pitt described it as “an episode,“aligning with previous commentsmade by two podcast hosts who said it “should be thought of more of a follow-up that’s connected to but not the same as” its predecessor. There is also the potential to expand the franchise further with more “episodes” from different periods, considering the upcoming film picks up several years after the original, with Cliff having stepped back from stunts to become a Hollywood studio fixer.

The Cliff Booth Spin-Off Is Nearing Production
In the same conversation, Pitt revealed they are starting production in July, which tracks, as casting announcements have ramped up in recent months.Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debickiwere the first to join the ensemble, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II later signing on. Mateen played the fan-favorite DC villain Black Manta in theAquamanmovies, but this time, he is rumored to be playing a character “in the vein of Jim Brown, who famously ended his Hall of Fame football career early to focus on acting, starring in such hits asThe Dirty Dozen.”
Tarantino has written scripts for other directors before, most notablyTrue Romance(directed by Tony Scott),Natural Born Killers(directed by Oliver Stone), andFrom Dusk Till Dawn(directed by Robert Rodriguez). However, a sequel has never been made to a Tarantino-directed film without him being behind the camera. In this case, he likely set the script aside for another accomplished filmmaker to avoid having theOnce Upon a Time… in Hollywoodspin-off as his final feature, since it is well-known that hewants to retire after his 10th film.
