AsPacific Rim 2, rumored to be titledPacific Rim: Malestrom, nears production, the cast continues to grow.Director Steven DeKnighthas teased that the project has added a new cast member, but sadly, he wasn’t overly specific about who it is. What we do know is that someone from the upcoming horror thrillerThe Belko Experimentis in thePacific Rimsequel.

DeKnighttook to hisTwitteraccount on Monday to reveal that he is very much looking forward toThe Belko Experiment, which was written byGuardians of the GalaxydirectorJames Gunn. Much more importantly, the director revealed that somebody from the cast of that movie has joined the cast ofPacific Rim: Maelstrom, but he didn’t say exactly who. Here is what he did have to say about it.

“So looking forward to this. And someone in this cast just happens to be in #PacificRim2…”

The good news is thatThe Belko Experimenthas a very impressive cast and it is very easy to see almost anyone from that movie fitting intoMaelstromquite nicely. The bad news is that with whatDeKnightgave us to work with, it is borderline impossible to speculate reasonably as to who it could be.Michael RookerofThe Walking DeadorJohn C. McGinleyofScrubsandOffice Spacefame could fit in nicely. Other actors likeJosh BrenerofSilicon ValleyorJohn Gallagher Jr.ofThe Newsroomcould fit in much likeCharlie Daydid in the original. The Belko Experimentcast also includesAdria ArjonaofTrue Detectivefame andSean GunnofGuardians of the Galaxy, as well asOwain YeomanfromThe Mentalist, all of which could find a home in the nextPacific Rim.

The firstPacific Rimmade $411 million worldwide, which is a pretty decent haul just as a number itself. However, when the reported $190 million price tag is factored in, which doesn’t account for marketing costs, the number is much less impressive. It was enough to justify a sequel though, but the shaky numbers have likely contributed to the delay in getting the project off the ground. But the train is on the tracks now, and production is expected to start onMaelstromby the end of the year.

At the moment, we know thatCharlie Hunnamwon’t be returning forPacific Rim: Maelstrom, butStar Wars: The Force AwakensbreakoutJohn Boyegawill bejoining the castasIdris Elba’s son.Scott Eastwoodis also rumored to be taking on a role in the movie andRon Perlman’s character Hannibal Chau is expected to return. As for what member ofThe Belko Experiment Castwill be joining them? We will have to wait and see.Guillermo Del Toro, who directed the firstPacific Rim, has remained on the project as an executive producer withSteven DeKnightdirecting.Pacific Rim: Maelstromis set for release on June 12, 2025.
