IFC Films has just released a new trailer forPaint. Inspired by legendary artist Bob Ross and his public access TV showThe Joy of Painting, the film starsOwen Wilsonas a similar painter, complete with the curly hair and calm demeanor. With this character, however, things aren’t quite so happy when a younger, better painter comes into the picture, threatening the man’s livelihood as he knows it. You can get an idea of what the unique film is like by watching the new trailer below.

InPaint, Wilson plays Carl Nargle, the No. 1 public TV painter in Vermont who is “convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke… until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.”

Paint Is Something New for Owen Wilson

More than a decade has been put into making this movie by writer-director Brit McAdams. There was obviously a lot of thought put into who should be cast in the film’s lead role once it came time to finally start shooting the film, but fortunately for McAdams, it was clear that they had found their Carl Nargle once Wilson was in character and reading his lines for the movie. According to McAdams, the performance has made the wait to getting this film made worth every minute.

“I spent months talking with Owen about the script — I think people forget about the incredible movies he’s written with Wes Anderson — but he’s so good at tracking every part of a story so it was an absolute gift to spend time with him going through the beats of the film,” McAdams recently toldPeople. “Obviously, I looked at him a lot during that process. But when he actually stepped in front of the camera as Carl Nargle the cinematographer (my old friend/genius Patrick Cady) and we turned to each other and whispered, ‘Holy cow.'”

McAdams added, “The (12!) years of prep and rewriting the script and having the movie come together and fall apart were immediately beyond worth it. With Owen as Carl Nargle everything just came alive. That’s what Owen brings to the part and the world ofPaint. He’s very funny in it but you also feel so much for him as he loses everything he values while fighting to discover what he actually needs to be happy.”

Paintwill premiere in movie theaters on August 15, 2025. The official poster, which you’re able to see below, provides another tease of the upcoming film.
