It has been rumored that the long-anticipated sequelThe Princess Diaries 3might actually shoot sometime in 2017. While an official start date has not been announced for thisDisney comedy, original director of the first two movies,Garry Marshall, says the project is a go. And that his leading lady,Anne Hathaway, will return. But he has to wait for a very special event to take place before cameras can roll.
Yes, it sounds likeAnne Hathawaywill be reprising her iconic star-making role as Disney’sPrincess Mia Thermopolis. DirectorGarry Marshallrevealed the news toPeople, explaining that both he andAnne Hathawayare excited to start shooting. But they’ll have to wait for the birth ofAnne Hathaway’s child before they can proceed. He explains.
“I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan. Anne Hathaway is verypregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”
It was last summer that rumors of The Princess Diaries 3 started to flood the Internet. But at the time, it wasn’t known ifAnne Hathawaywould return, or if Genovia would be getting a new ruler.Anne HathawayandGarry Marshallfirst teamed up in 2001 forThe Princess Diaries, which was a surprise hit for Disney.The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagementreunited the pair in 2004. Between 2000 and 2009 over a dozen books following Princess Mia Thermopolis have been published by author Meg Cabot.
After a six year hiatus, Meg Cabot returned with her latest book in 2015, which revolves around Mia’s Royal Wedding. It isn’t known if The Princess Diaries 3 will be based on this book.Chris Pine, who co-starred inThe Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, has said in the past that he is open to returning. DirectorGarry Marshallsaid this about the possibility.
“Maybe. He’s quite big now, you know.”
