The massive press tour forMarvel’sAvengers: Age of Ultronis winding down, with the release date just one week away. Two of the Avengers,Chris Evans' Captain America andRobert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, will be back, though with a much different dynamic, in the firstPhase ThreeadventureCaptain America: Civil War. While promotingAvengers: Age of Ultronin a joint interview with The Washington Post, both actors shed some new light on this sequel, which finds Steve and Tony on opposite sides of the Superhero Registration Act, where every superhero must register themselves with the government and join a global police force.Chris Evansteased that Tony has been changed after the events ofAvengers: Age of Ultron, which leads in toCaptain America: Civil War.
“Morality hits Tony, humanity hits Tony. All of a sudden he feels responsible. Neither one of them are blindly convicted. It’s blurry and that’s what makes it great. No one’s right, no one’s wrong.”
Robert Downey Jr.says that both Steve and Tony staunchly believe that their side is right, which will make it harder to find a common ground.
“It’s going to make it even harder for them to come to an agreement, which I’m really excited about.”
Chris Evansadded that Steve’s relationship with Tony is like a marriage, with each side having a different approach.
“It’s like a marriage. We love each other but it’s explosive. You’re working toward the same goal but you have very different approaches to it.”
Robert Downey Jr.added that he’s looking forward to a time when Tony and Steve have more to do, aside from fight with each other. WithAvengers: Infinity Warcoming up in a few years, there’s still plenty of time for these characters to put aside their differences.
“I’m really stoked to see when we have more stuff to actually do together besides like act like we’re about to have a fight one day.”
Captain America: Civil Waris the first of Marvel’s nine-moviePhase Threeslate, in which the studio will start putting out three movies a year, instead of two. When asked if he thinks fans might be suffering from “superhero exhaustion,Chris Evanshad this to say.
“Some people say there’s going to be superhero exhaustion. But these movies aren’t just superhero movies. The superhero involvement is what’s going to bring the audiences because of the familiar properties but then you get into the movie and it’s not just him and his suit, it’s not just me and my shield. It’s people having real life discussions and real life conflicts as characters, that’s what people are going to relate to.”
Robert Downey Jr.also appeared onLate Show with David Lettermanlast night, where he spoke America: Civil War.
“Well, it’s called Civil War, and there was a strain of comics where Captain America and Iron Man, they went on different sides, and they fought each other. I wouldn’t call either of them evil, [but they want control.]”
The actor confirmed that production will start in a few weeks, and he also essentially confirmed what many fans already knew, that the newSpider-Manwill be present inCaptain America: Civil War.
“He may well be… Yeah, I hear that they’re looking to cast a new Spider-Man.”
