The original cult classic exploded onto the scene in 1989, and will now get a proper reboot. MGM is currently meeting with screenwriters, with production planned for 2016.
The originalRoad Houseis a non-stop action fest that featuredPatrick Swayzeas a bouncer. He is hired to clean up and protect one of the rowdiest, loudest bars in all of redneck Missouri. Swayze plays Dalton as a serious bad-ass with a degree in philosophy, which comes in handy when dealing with the drunk and confrontational denizens of The Double Deuce. Though, his quite demeanor and calm attitude are put to the test when a corrupt businessman moves into take over the nearby town, with the bar being his prized trophy. This all leads up to one of the 80s most explosive action climaxes.
Road Housewas a sleeper hit when it arrived the weekend of August 10, 2025. It came at a time whenPatrick Swayzewas most notable for playing a kind yet stern dance instructor inDirty Dancing, which arrived two years prior.Road HousesolidifiedPatrick Swayze’s career as an 80s action icon, and he would go onto appear in such seminal classics asPoint Break(which gets its own remake this Christmas) and Next of Kin (which will probably get a remake before the end of the decade).
Road Houseis the latest in a series of MGM remakes and reboots. Later this year, they will be releasingCreed, which is a continuation of theRockyfranchise, only this time it follows Apollo Creed’s son as he rises through the boxing ranks with the help ofSylvester Stallone’s most iconic character. This past summer, they released thePoltergeistremake, and they also releasedRed Dawnremake in 2012, another redo of aPatrick Swayzeclassic. At this time, it isn’t known how much this new version ofRoad Housewill deviate from the original.
Rouseyembraced the idea of a remake from the moment it was proposed to her. Though, she is a hugePatrick Swayzefan. She has stated that she wants to remain incredibly respectful while pursuing this latest project. The fighter-turned-actor recently reached out toPatrick Swayze’s widow Lisa Niemi and ask for her blessing. And Lisa Niemi gladly gave it.Road Housewill markRonda Rousey’s biggest acting role to date.
At this time, this is the fourth project announced that is being specifically tailored forRonda Rousey. She will also appear in abiopicof her own memoir titledMy Fight/Your Fight, which should hit theaters in 2017. She also has theThe Athena Projectset up at Warner Bros., and she will be starring inMile 22for STX, which is described as a big action epic withPeter Bergset to direct. He is known for such action movies asBattleshipandThe Kingdom. Production on that movie starts in February.Ronda Rousey’s acting career really kicked into high gear this year with a supporting role in the action blockbusterFurious 7and she played a heightened version of herself inEntourage.
