It took a very long time forThe Boysto find its way as a series on Prime Video, as the original plan was for the comic book series to be adapted as a feature film. This was a project that has its development dating back to 2008 when Columbia Pictures picked up the rights to do a movie based onThe Boyswith Neal Moritz producing. When it fizzled out, the movie was moved over to Paramount where Adam McKay was on board to direct, but for whatever reason, that incarnation ofThe Boysnever saw the light of day, either.

Perhaps locking down that full commitment from a studio to move forward with something as off-the-wall asThe Boyswas difficult in years past, but Amazon would eventually see the potential in developing the comics as a new series. PerScreen Rant, Rogen teamed up with Evan Goldberg andSupernaturalcreator Eric Kripke to help develop the show, and as we’ve since seen, it turned out to be a hit. As regaled on First We Feast’sHot Onesseries, Rogen noted how he and Goldberg always knewThe Boyswould be successful from the start.

The Boys

“Something like The Boys was obvious to us. It’s a funny journey with the comic, me and Evan, we’re big fans of Garth Ennis, he wrote the comic and he wrote Preacher as well, we bought the first issue when it came out and we were like, ‘Oh my god, this would make a great movie. Regular people fighting superheroes.’ We brought it to Sony and Neal Moritz, the producer, and they were like, ‘Yeah, this would make an incredible movie, we’ll buy the rights to it.’ Then they did and they did not hire us to write it or produce it in any way shape or form.”

Rogen goes on to detail how after other people were shuffled in to developThe Boys, it never worked out. This mean the project eventually fell back to Rogen and Goldberg when they had been a bit more established, and by this point, they felt that it had even more potential as an ongoing series. Fortunately for everyone involved, Amazon agreed.

“They hired other people to do that and after like a decade of those people f—ing it up in some shape or form, it came back to us and we turned it into the TV show. I think people love superhero stuff and Marvel is obviously very popular and makes great films and TV shows, but there are certain things they can’t do, it would be too damaging to their brand to have a character kill someone with their 10-inch d—k.”

The Boys Returns With New Episodes on Prime Video in June

The Boyswill come back in June with the premiere of season 3. Fans are excited to see what happens next after Billy Butcher and the gang were officially appointed to keep an eye on the Supes in the Seven, now earning paychecks for doing what they’d already done for the first two seasons. We also should expect for the third season to be the craziest one yet right from the start.

“Without giving away any spoilers, I was just in editing yesterday, and we’re doing something here in the season 3 premiere that is not only I think the craziest thing we’ve ever done, it’s got to be up there with thecraziest thing anyone’s ever done,” Kripke previously said of the new season, per Deadline. “Maybe it won’t work. Who knows? But I’m just so high on this gag that we’re pulling off. And it’s certainly something nobody has ever seen before, probably for good reason. So all that’s really exciting.”
