The Paramount Network has released a new red band trailer for the highly-anticipated new seriesHeathers, based on the cult classic film of the same name. While there isn’t any nudity or R-rated language in this trailer, it certainly is risque, and gives us a new look at the mysterious character played by Shannen Doherty, the only originalHeatherscast member to return for the series, and Selma Blair as Jade, while teasing what could be a pretty big spoiler.
Much like the movie it is based on, this Paramount Network series followsVeronica Sawyer(Grace Victoria Cox), a high school student who is dealing with three “Heathers,” although they are much different than the original trio from the movie, played by Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk and Kim Walker. The head Heather is Heather Chandler (Melanie Field), the unconventional leader of thispopular high school cliqueand rules Westerburg High through fear, intimidation and amazing fashion sense. The trailer features one of several scenes with a meeting among teachers, where one is surprised that “fat kids can be popular,” while another teacher corrects him by stating that the preferred term is “body positive.”
The second Heather is actually a boy, Heather Duke (Brendan Scannell), Heather C’s #1 sidekick who harnesses the Heather’s power to destroy whoever he views as a total discount hobgoblin. The trio is rounded out by Heather McNamara (Jasmine Mathews), considered the nicest Heather in the group who lives in the shadow of the others. She’s hiding a dark secret that she doesn’t want to be exposed. Their reign of terror could be coming to an end though with the arrival of JD Dean (James Scully), the new boy in town who becomes Veronica’s new boyfriend. We can see in the trailer that he most certainly has a dark side, as he sets out on a reckless path of destruction proving that no one, even his girlfriend Veronica is safe. The trailer ends with two scenes that seemingly reveal Veronica and JD managed to actually kill Heather C, with the final scene featuring a student approaching Veronica stating that Heather C committed suicide. While it’s possible that Heather C actually wasn’t killed, this revelation does seem to be quite the spoiler, but we’ll know for sure when the series premieres in March.
