It’s official! The long-rumoredSons of Anarchyspinoff is moving forward at FX. The show will be calledMayans MC. And originalSOAcreatorKurt Sutterwill be back as a producer, alongside co-creator of this new seriesElgin James.Jamesis writing the script.
FX Network has only just begun script development on thespinoff, according toVariety.Mayans MCwill be a dark and visceral family drama. It will focus on the American icons known as the 1% outlaw. Only this time, the stories will be filtered through aLatinolens. SaysSutterof bringingJamesinto the mix to pen the pilot script.
“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”
The Mayansmotorcycle gangwas a key player in severalSons of Anarchyepisodes during the show’s impressive 7 year run on FX. It still stands at the highest-rated drama series in the history of the cable network. AndSutterhas been with the channel even longer thanSonshas been on the air. He began his career with FX working as a staff writer onThe Shield. He would eventually rise to become an executive producer on that acclaimed series. Following the end ofSons of Anarchy, he went onto create the medeviel dramaThe Bastard Executionerfor the network. Though, that show proved to be short lived.
Elgin Jamesis perhaps best known for his debut feature as a director,Little Birds. It landed him on Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch list. Before becoming a filmmaker, he established the anti-racist Boston street gang FSU. He then moved to L.A. to hone his talents behind the camera, joining the Sundance Institute Feature Film program.Little Birdswas placed into competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Just a few short months later, he was taken to prison on the gang-related charge of federal extortion.
Following his time spend behind bars,Jamessigned onto directedA Million Little Pieces, which begins shooting later this year. He is also developing a movie based on the troubled life of actress Jean Seberg, adapted from the biography “Breathless” by Garry McGee. It isn’t yet known ifElgin Jameswill also direct theMayans MCpilot, but that sounds most likely. At this time, FX has not set a premiere date for the spinoff.
