Star Warshas had a much more successful time getting television projects off the ground when compared to the stalled development of several theatrical projects. However, that doesn’t mean that every Disney+ series has gone off without a hitch. One series that sparked considerable controversy during its run on the streaming service wasThe Acolyte, aStar Warsstory set 100 years beforeStar Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, which tells a murder mystery set during the High Republic era.The Matrixstar Carrie-Anne Moss would be central to the marketing of the series as Jedi Master Indara, which shocked fans that she would die in the opening scene of the first episode.

In an interview withBusiness Insider,Moss told the website that she was initially surprised at the fan outrage of her character being killed off. Moss has cemented herself as a high-caliber action star, and the prospect of theMatrixalum donning Jedi robes and lightsaber had plenty of people excited. Retrospectively, Moss would soon recognize that the outrage made sense, and she would state her surprise that she didn’t consider it, as she would say:

“The reaction to it from the fans, I kind of thought, ‘Wow, how did I not think of that? I mean, I serve the writers and the directors. It didn’t cross my mind. But afterward, when people made a big deal about it, I was like, ‘How did I miss that?’ I didn’t think it would be a big deal at all. [Show creator] Leslye [Headland] really pitched that to me that she really wanted me to do this because she wanted it to be believable. I didn’t really think about it. I think the reaction to it from the fans, I kind of thought, ‘Wow, how did I not think of that?”

‘The Acolyte’ Was Unafraid to Kill Off Fan-Favorite Characters

Upon the airing of the first episode on Disney+ in June 2024, fans took to social media to voice their complaints about what was likely perceived as a bait-and-switch with the promotional material for the show. One user on X would jokingly write, “I swear if you hyped up a Carrie-Anne Moss Jedi only for her role to be THAT small, I imma force choke someone.” When another user replied and stated that Moss would appear in flashbacks, the same user would interject that “the way they marketed the show, it seemed like she was one of the LEADS.”

Some members of the ‘Star Wars’ community have relaunched a fan campaign for ‘The Acolyte’ to get a second season on Disney+.

The Acolytewouldn’t stop with the death of Moss’ character, as the show would feature heavy casualties, as Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) and his team, who are helping him investigate the murders, Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen), and Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett) would all eventually be killed by the series’ end. It was a darkStar Warsseries that had a promising future, especially as the season finale ended with a tease of both Yoda and Darth Plagueis. However, that would ultimately never come to fruition, as the series was canceled, with plans fora potential season 2scrapped.

Carrie-Anne Moss, not knowing that her character’s death inThe Acolytewould cause backlash, is a testament to her humility. While it is sad that Moss wasn’t able to fully flesh out her role as Jedi Master Indara inThe Acolyte, fans can take solace in the fact that she received an incredible opening action sequence in the first episode of the show. Moreover, there is always the chance that another movie or series is set further back than the events ofThe Acolyte, allowing for her to return.
