Despite the fact that the DC movie universe is abandoning his vision, Zack Snyder isn’t done just yet. It’s been a wild 24 hours or so for DC fans, as a metric ton of huge news has come to light. Ben Affleck is officially not going to star inThe Batman, which finally has a 2021 release date, theSuper Petsmovie is coming and James Gunn is going to directThe Suicide Squad, which will actually be more of a reboot than a sequel. And, as it just so happens, Snyder will be an executive producer.

This detail was buried within the report that broke the news revealing James Gunn is in talks to directSuicide Squad 2, which is going under the title The Suicide Squad, for Warner Bros. According to that report,Zack Snyderand his wife/producing partner Deborah Snyder will serve as executive producers on the movie. Gunn had been hired to pen the screenplay several months ago and, at the time, it was said that the hope was he would step up to direct it and that’s exactly what is going to happen.

Zack Snyder, who directedMan of Steel,Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceandremains the credited director on Justice League(despite the fact that it’s largely not the vision he set out to bring to life), is the architect of the early days of DCEU Films. Unfortunately, that vision proved to be divisive and withJustice League, things came to a head, leading to a radical shift behind the scenes. That has meant big changes to the future slate and part of the reason that James Gunn is more or less rebooting Suicide Squad (even though it will still take place in the same continuity), as opposed to making a more direct sequel.

Still, for whatever reason, the Snyders will remain producers on at least this project. And let us not forget, the last timeJames Gunn and Zack Snyder teamed up, good things happened. Gunn wrote the screenplay for Snyder’s directorial debut, theDawn of the Deadremake, which turned out quite well. Interestingly, Snyder’s next directorial effort is going to be a zombie heist movie for Netflix titledArmy of the Dead. But he’s still making at least some time for DC, even if it is just as a producer.

Disney fired James Gunnas director ofGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3last year after a series of old, offensive tweets resurfaced online. Warner Bros. was quick to scoop him up for this gig and he’s been busy penning the screenplay. The Suicide Squad, which is set to hit theaters on August 05, 2025, will center on a new cast of characters which presumably won’t include anyone like Deadshot, Captain Boomerang or Harley Quinn who headlined David Ayer’s 2016 movie. Zack Snyder, meanwhile, seemed to be done with DC following theJustice Leaguedebacle. Not so fast on that one. This news was first reported byThe Hollywood Reporter.
