One of the former actors honored with bringing the Man of Steel to live-action life in the past has broken his silence about the new version ofSupermanby James Gunn.Brandon Routh, most famous for portraying the iconic superhero in the 2006 feature filmSuperman Returns, has now declared his support for the film, with the actor having a surprisingly emotional reaction to the DCU reboot.

Back in 2006, Routh was responsible for breathing new life into the character who had stayed dormant (at least in the feature film format) for decades.Superman Returnswas one of the actor’s first movies, and though it had a decent reception from critics and audiences, Warner Bros. felt that it justwasn’t enough to warrant a franchise. Routh had no choice but to redirect his career outside the superhero genre. Nonetheless, he has shown nothing but support for the 2025 reboot, saying, “It was a lot of fun,” and even sharing the fact that he may have cried after seeing the movie. Markingyet more support from a previous Superman.

Brandon Routh as Superman Returns

“It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it. I think David [Corenswet] is fantastic. I cried no less than three times.

I see this in a different way. I come at it from a different perspective. I really got into it as I’m watching him navigate those tricky Superman moments in the first conversation with Lois and Clark in the apartment. And then all of the family stuff for me really hit. It’s a big movie. There’s a lot in there. I have to go see it again.”

How Brandon Routh’s Superman Role Nearly Destroyed His Career

Instead of catapulting Brandon Routh to superstardom, Superman Returns turned Routh into a working actor.

Per Variety, Routh iscurrently promoting his new movie,Ick, in which he co-stars with 2000s icon Mena Suvari. Directed by music video visionary Joseph Kahn, the film is a genre mash-up that sees Routh playing a science teacher falling in love in the middle of an alien invasion. “I’m doing good, all things considered with the state of the world,” Routh answers when asked how he’s doing. He also showed excitement about his new movie and the newSuperman: “I got a movie coming out and Superman is also out. It’s a good summer.”

“I Really Am Excited for the Potential for the DC Universe”

James Gunn and company don’t exactlyneedthe support of peers or those involved with previousSupermaniterations. After all, the 2025 re-imagining of the iconic Man of Steel isdoing great in theaters, as much as the Snyderverse fans want to debunk this by spreading misinformation all over the internet. Nevertheless, it must be nice – especially for Corenswet – to get the nod from people who have participated in the iconic franchise in the past. Routh is undoubtedly a nice guy who shows nothing but joy at what’s in storefor James Gunn’s vision of the DC Universe:

“I really am excited for the potential for the DC Universe. A successful launch with this is just good for everybody who wants more of what DC has to offer. There are a lot of great properties that can be explored.”
