It has been a rough time being aDoctor Whofan, but for those diehard supporters who have stuck with the sci-fi show through thick and thin…and even thinner…it looks like the fate of the series has now been put beyond doubt. It also looks like the continuation of the series does nothang on the whim of Disney wanting to continue investing in The Doctorand his travels in the TARDIS.

Doctor Whomanaged just fine without a Disney deal until 2024, and it looks like it will do so once again if the House of Mouse decides not to pump more money into the show. While there are other streamers now in the mix, including Netflix and HBO Max, according to the BBC’s new Chief Content Officer, Doctor Who will be back, even if the British broadcaster has to go it alone once more. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival (viaSFFGazette) , Kate Phillips said:

Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who Season 2

“Rest assured, Doctor Who is going nowhere. Disney has been a great partnership — and it continues with The War Between The Land And The Sea next year — but going forward, with or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC. The Tardis is going nowhere.”

‘Doctor Who’ Fans Were Shocked By Ncuti Gatwa’s Exit

WhenNcuti Gatwa took over the role of The Doctor, many believed that he would be in it for the long term, or at least more than just two seasons. Instead, he joined a group of stars who have had only a fleeting turn in the TARDIS, just like Paul McGann’s TV movie incarnation as The Eighth Doctor (although he did return in several cameo appearances), and Christopher Eccleston’s single-season stint back in 2005.

In a candid chat on BBC’sSunday with Laura Kuenssbergprogram, Gatwa explained why he left the show, citing his age as one of the main reasons. He admitted that it felt like the right moment to step away from the role because it had started to take a toll on him, saying:

“I’m getting old and my body was tired… It’s the most amazing job in the world, a job that any actor would dream of and – because it’s so good – it’s strenuous. It takes a lot out of you, physically, emotionally, mentally, and so it was time.”

This is not something that many long-term fans really bought into, especially considering the many actors older than Gatwa, 32, who have played the role, such as Peter Capaldi (took on the role at 55) and Christopher Eccleston (who was 41).
