HBO has finally unleashed the official trailer forThe Last of UsSeason 2, and fans will have to brace themselves for another emotional trip to the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Based on the best-selling gameThe Last of Us Part II, the new season of the hit adaptation will cover some of themost controversial (and exciting)elements of the entire franchise. For many, the intense, bone-breaking storyline is by far the best in the series, but for others, it takes things a step too far. No matter where you stand,The Last of UsSeason 2 promises that it will be a no-holds-barred interpretation of the daunting source material.

After releasing several brief teasers, the latest trailer sets the stage for the most ambitious season ofThe Last of Usyet. Among the new additions to the Emmy-winning series is Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, one of the main protagonists in the video game this season is based on. A mysterious figure with a personal agenda of her own, Abby brings about a reckoning in the world ofThe Last of Us, and so does her counterpart, Ellie (Bella Ramsey). As the official trailer suggests, there will be a five-year time jump, and it’s safe to say the characters we loved are not the same since we last saw them. Check out the logline for Season 2:

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Is Not a One-For-One Adaptation

The first season ofThe Last of Uswas a faithful adaptation of the source material, but it was not afraid of adding or removing from the storyline to better fit the episodic medium. The same can be expected for the highly-anticipated Season 2, which will reportedly tell one half of the second game’s narrative. Neil Druckmann, who directed the original games and co-founded the HBO series, recently confirmedthatThe Last of UsSeason 2 will be making some key changes, while still retaining the “DNA” of the video game it is based on.

“I love the changes that we’ve made. It’s a different version of that story, but its DNA is in there. Maybe more than excited, I’m really curious what their reaction will be.”

Despite featuring an all-star cast and crew, some fans have taken exception to the lack of game accuracy in some key sections. One of which includes Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, who was purposely told not to bulk up for the role. In the game, she is a muscle-bound character that rivals Joel in strength, allowing the player to pull off some brutal violence. However, since there is no longer a need forso much action, the underlying drama rises to the top as a priority. It’s hard to argue against this, especially since the first season successfully changed aspects of the game to great effect, but fans hoping for a bulked-up Abby will have to check their expectations.
