After the fourth season ofStranger Thingstook the world by storm, another Netflix original series is taking the crown as the #1 original streaming show in the country. According to the lateststreaming data from Nielsen, which looks at the week of June 20-26, the third season ofThe Umbrella Academywas viewed for 2.45 billion minutes, beating out the 2.33 billion minutes of watch time accrued byStranger Thingsduring the same period. The numbers do come with a bit of a caveat, as the second part of the latestStranger Thingsseason had yet to premiere on Netflix during that week, whileThe Umbrella Academypremiered on June 22.Stranger Thingsis expected to take back the top spot as the data comes out for the following few weeks, but for now,The Umbrella Academyis standing tall.
It’s an impressive debut number forThe Umbrella Academy, which has continued to grow in popularity since it first premiered in 2019. The first season of the series based on the Gerard Way comic books was streamed by more than 45 million viewers in its first month of release. Nielsen data for season two showedThe Umbrella Academywas watched by more than 43 million viewers in its first 28 days of release, and numbers for the first month of season three are expected to be comparable when they’re compiled. Season three ofThe Umbrella Academyhas also beenwell-reviewed by critics, earning a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 72 on Metacritic, the highest marks the series has gotten to date. Given the success the series has continued to enjoy and how the season finale played out, it’s safe to assume thatThe Umbrella Academyis going to be back for a fourth season sometime in the near future.

Netflix as a Whole is Dominating the Nielsen Charts
Looking at the rest of the top 10 for original streaming series, Netflix dominates the chart with seven entries. Along withThe Umbrella AcademyandStranger Things, shows such asPeaky Blinders,God’s Favorite Idiot,Ozark, andThe Lincoln Lawyerare being watched by millions of people across the country. Despite the recent financial struggles Netflix has been having, its original programming is continuing to connect with viewers, beating out series on many other major streamers. The Nielsen streaming ratings cover Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video, so even though competition is gotten stiffer, Netflix still seems to have a strong foothold in the streaming world. The non-Netflix shows in the top 10 areObi-Wan Kenobi,The Boys, andThe Summer I Turned Prettyon Prime Video.
