The zombie-laden world of AMC’sThe Walking Deadis so deadly that fans tune in every week, not knowing who will live and who will be turned into a zombie. WhileRobert Kirkman’s comic books that the show is based on do serve as guide as to what may happen from week to week, the show has certainly been known to throw a few curveballs at its viewers. For instance, Shane (Jon Bernthal) was killed in just the sixth issue of the comic, but he made it to the end ofSeason 2in the series. While fans await this weekend’s episodeJSSto see who might turn into zombie food next,Robert Kirkmanshared an interesting tidbit atNew York Comic Conover the weekend, revealing the one character who will never die in the TV series to a packed crowd at the Javits Center.
“The Carol that’s in the comic was my attempt to show just how broken an individual can become from thezombie apocalypse. The Carol in the show, which is a much better character let’s be honest, actually is made stronger by all the more horrible things that happen to her in the show. Killing her would definitely not … we can’t do that. Does anybody want Carol to die on the show?”
Vulturereports that the crowd responded with an overwhelming “No,” in regards to Carol dying. This is the first time thatRobert Kirkmanhas openly admitting that a particular character will never die. This means that it’s at least possible the group’s main leader Rick (Andrew Lincoln) or other key survivors such as Daryl (Norman Reedus), Glenn (Steven Yeun), Maggie (Lauren Cohan) andMichonne(Danai Gurira) could die at some point in the show. Whether or not that will actually happen, though, is anybody’s guess.
Robert Kirkmanhas stated numerous times in the past that no character is truly safe, which could certainly be a big factor regarding how the show is such a huge ratings hit. It’s also worth noting that Carol did die in the comics, in Issue #42, where she was shot dead by Andrea after being bitten in the neck by a zombie. It’s also possible thatRobert Kirkman’s surprising statement could have been made to lull fans into a false sense of security before Carol actually does die in the show, but that’s only speculation at this point.
If Carol does actually survive all the way through the end of the series, whenever that may be, it will certainly provide an incredible character arc. During the first few seasons, she wasn’t exactly an integral part of the group, looking over her daughter Sophia and dealing with her abusive husband Ed, who died in the first season. Over the past five seasons, though, she has certainly emerged as one of the strongest characters in Rick’s group. Are you glad that Carol will never die inThe Walking Dead?
