The Winchesterswill delve into the history ofSupernaturaland tell the story of the parents of Dean and Sam Winchester “in the early days of their epic love story.” Now the first image ofJensen Acklesback in his role of Dean Winchester has been released ahead of the series arriving on The CW in October. Ackles, who has been a big part of the production, will act as a narrator the new show, but will not have an active role in the story itself, which takes place years beforeSupernatural, making the actor the only original cast member to return.

The Winchesterswas originally announced last summer, and at the time of the announcement there was a falling out on social media between Ackles and formerSupernaturalco-star Jared Padalecki, who only discovered that the series was happening via social media announcements. Although the two soon patched up their differences, Padalecki has no involvement in the show at all. However, Ackles appearance as Dean Winchester has now been revealed for the first time in an image showing him leaning against a car as he seemingly bookends the episodes, which was shared byTV Insider.

Supernaturalran for 15 seasons before coming to an end in 2020. Jensen Ackles Was Not Originally Certain About Being Part of The Winchesters

Like many long-running shows, when the end arrives there is always a question of whether it should be left alone or allowed to expand in new ways. While there is no doubt thatSupernaturalwas a massively successful series, after 15 seasons it was perhaps the right time to call it a day, but by the time the season finale arrives, work onThe Winchestershad already begun. Ackles previously explained that he was initially dubious about the show, but a little work with Thompson changed that. He said:

“To be honest, I was like, ‘I don’t know if we can do this, and then it took [writer] Robbie [Thompson] and me sitting down going like, ‘Well, we know we have to do this, and we know we have to do that, but if we just connect those dots with a straight line, that’s not entertaining. That’s boring. That’s a simple story. If we connect those dots in a much crazier, wild Supernatural way, then we’ve got a show.’ So that’s what we’ve been doing.”

The Winchesterswill premiere on The CW on October 11. In the meantime, the entire 15-season run ofSupernatural, consisting of a massive 327 episodes, is available to watch on Netflix, although it may be a struggle to cram it all in before the arrival of the prequel series.
