Thor 3 Wants Cate Blanchett, Is She Valkyrie?

Just hours after receiving aGolden Globenomination for her performance in the indie dramaCarol,Cate Blanchettmay be heading to theMarvelCinematic Universe.Varietyreports that the actress is in talks for one of the female lead roles in theMarvel Phase ThreeadventureThor: Ragnarok. No details were given about what character she will play, but, ironically, she was actually mentioned in a recent report, in regards to the caliber of actress the studio is seeking.

Last month’s report revealed thatMarvelis seeking a “high-caliber actress” likeCate Blanchett, but that was for the villain role, not one of the female leads. The female villain was rumored to beAmora the Enchantress, who was listed as one of the potential villains along with Hela, Queen of the Dead. If the studio does go with either of these characters, it would mark the first female villain ever in theMarvel Cinematic Universe.

A separate report from October claimed that the studio was looking to cast “great women” inThor: Ragnarok, which could bring in another iconic female character, Valkyrie, a.k.a. Brunnhilde. In the Marvel Comics, Valkyrie’s most notable villain was Amora the Enchantress, so it’s possible that both of these characters may be present inThor: Ragnarok. For now, though, all we know is thatCate Blanchettis in talks for one of the female leads.

Chris HemsworthandTom Hiddlestonwill return as Thor and Loki, withMark Ruffalorecently entering talks to return as Hulk. Both Thor and Hulk are said to go on a “cosmic road trip” inThor: Ragnarok. It still isn’t known ifThorandThor: The Dark WorldstarsNatalie Portman(Jane Foster),Anthony Hopkins(Odin),Stellan Skarsgård(Dr. Erik Selvig) andIdris Elba(Heimdall) will be back.

Taika Waititi(What We Do in the Shadows) is directing from a script byChristopher YostandCraig Kyle, withBlack ListwriterStephany Folsomcoming aboard last week to provide a rewrite. Production is scheduled to begin next summer in Australia. IfCate Blanchettdoes sign on, it will be her first ever role in a superhero movie.
