Tim Allenrevealed an interesting tidbit aboutToy Story 5, one that suggests a fan-favorite character will at the forefront of the new movie - but it won’t be Buzz or Woody. 2025 marks the 30th anniversary ofToy Story’s release in theaters, kicking off one of the most profitable and critically acclaimed animated film series of all time. After three decades, the franchise is still going strong. A fifth film in the series is set to open in theaters on July 05, 2025.Toy Story 5certainly has fans concerned it will be more of the same, but it looks like Pixar will shake up the franchise a bit by shifting the main character.
In an interview withWIBV, viaDeadline,Buzz Lightyear voice actor Tim Allen revealed thatToy Story 5will center on the character of Jessie, the cowgirl doll voiced by Joan Cusack, who debuted inToy Story 2. Allen also revealed that the movie will reunite Woody and Buzz Lightyear after the two friends went their separate ways following the end ofToy Story 4. Allen said:

“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie. Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”
The reveal thatToy Story 5will center on Jessie is certainly an interesting one. Since the franchise began, it has always focused on Woody and Buzz, with Woody taking a leading role in bothToy Story 3andToy Story 4. Even inToy Story 4, whichbumped up the role of Bo Peep due to her absence inToy Story 3, Woody and Buzz were still the stars of the show. However, making Jessie a more prominent character forToy Story 5makes a certain amount of sense.

‘Toy Story 5’ Update Teases Major Shake Up for the Beloved Pixar Franchise
Pixar boss Pete Docter spoke about the upcoming ‘Toy Story’ sequel, and the future of AI in animation.
Toy Story 4established that she had become Bonnie’s new favorite toy above Woody.WithToy Story 5seemingly focusing on kids' new attention to electronic deviceslike tablets and smartphones as opposed to traditional toys, this will likely drive a wedge between Jessie and Bonnie and see some of the characters' abandonment issues that were revealed inToy Story 2resurface. Jessie’s role inToy Story 4was notably smaller than in previous films, so similar to Bo Peep, the sequel gives the character a much-needed boost. This also isn’t the first time that Jessie has been the main character in aToy Storyproject. She was the focus of the 2013 Halloween-themed special,Toy Story of Terror.

There is still likely going to be a lot of Woody and Buzz in the movie, since they are the stars of the show, but Pixar shifting the lead protagonist for sequels is nothing new. Mater inCars 2, Dory inFinding Dory, Mike Wazowski inMonsters University, and Elastigirl inIncredibles 2. Pixar has often found shifting the perspective on who the main character is a justification for revisiting one of their classic films, and it seems to be the case withToy Story 5.
