It’s been a rocky run for the MCU over the past few years. Despite the odd success, likeDeadpool & Wolverine, much of Phase 5 has been considered to be a disappointment by Marvel fans. As well asFantastic Four: First Steps, which opens in theaters on July 25,Spider-Man: Brand New Dayis also expected to put the Marvel Cinematic Universe back on track.Tom Hollandreturns for his fourth standalone outing as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU, along withStranger Things' Sadie Sink in a still unconfirmed role. The film is currently in pre-production and is set to release on August 07, 2025. With cameras getting ready to roll and Tom Holland preparing to don the Spider-Man costume once again, the actor has revealed thatBrand New Daywill fix one of the biggest problems that has plagued the MCU for years.
Tom Holland recently sat down with Flip Your Wig, and the British actor was asked about returning as Spider-Man for a fourth standalone movie. “We were really restricted with what we could do in the last movie because of COVID,” Holland said of shootingSpider-Man: No Way Home, which is considered by many to be one of the MCU’s best post-Endgamefilms. However, with COVID restrictions being a thing of the past, Holland says thatSpider-Man 4is going old schoolin its filmmaking techniques, and it’s exactly what the MCU needs. He continued:

“Now we’re really gonna lean into that old school filmmaking and shoot in real locations … We are gonna use the streets of Glasgow for this massive set piece that we are putting together.”
Everything We Know About ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
‘Spider-Man 4’s details are largely being kept under wraps, but here’s what to expect from the cast, story, and release date.
Tom Holland went on to call the reinvigorated approach to practical filmmaking a “breath of fresh air” for the stale MCU. Phase 5 brought with it a consortium ofproblems for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There was no clear forward vision, movies and shows felt rushed, and many storytelling choices felt like commercial decisions, as opposed to creative ones. But, one of the biggest gripes fans have about the MCU is that it all feels corporately manufactured, thanks in large part to the excessive amount of green screen and CGI. “It’s gonna feel like a breath of fresh air … fans are gonna be over the moon with what we’re putting together,” Holland assured fans ofBrand New Day’s practical style.

The MCU Needs to Return to Practical Filmmaking
A franchise like the MCU, one which features superpowered humans who can fly through the sky, Norse gods, and various aliens, was always going to need some level of CGI. But, because of that, later entries in the MCU have felt lazily put together, with green screens and CGI being used as an easy way out, as opposed to directors and the studio finding the most interesting and creative ways to bring that to life.
A return to practical filmmaking is just one of many fixes the MCU needs to make to return to its heyday. It may have underperformed at the box office, but manyMCU fans were delighted withThunderbolts*/The New Avengers’practical approach to filmmaking. If what Tom Holland said is accurate, it’s a step in the right direction for the long-running franchise.
