Fans won’t have to wait long forMilly Alcock’sGirl of Steel to take flight on the Silver Screen, whether the rumor of her appearance inSupermanturns out to be true or not. The second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe has officially received a release date, andSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrowwill hit theaters on the heels of Gunn’sSupermanfilm, which begins its theatrical run on June 11, 2025. Yes, director Craig Gillespie’sSupergirlmovie will represent the newDCUin the Summer of 2026 when it opens on June 26.Woman of Tomorrow willalso receive the premium format treatment on IMAX screens.

Woman of Tomorrowis based on the eight-issue miniseries of the same name appearing in DC Comics which was written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely. This will mark the Girl of Steel’s first big-screen solo adventure since Helen Slater suited up as Kal-El’s Kryptonian cousin 40 years ago in director Jeannot Szwarc’sSupergirl(1984).

Legacy of Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow

James Gunn announced thatMilly Alcock won the role of Supergirlback in January. And according to the Co-Chair and Co-CEO of DC Studios, Alcock was the “first” actress Gunn mentioned to his collaborator… the other Co-Chair and Co-CEO of DC Studios, Peter Safran. Gunn posted via hisThreadsaccount:

“In case you missed this exciting news yesterday.Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role,well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics.I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticitywe needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are.Life is wild sometimes.”

During hisofficial announcement of the DCU(Chapter 1 —Gods and Monsters) back in January of 2023, Gunn described director Craig Gillespie’sWoman of Tomorrowas “a big, science fiction, epic film,” and he also spoke of Kara Zor-El as “a much more jaded character” than her Kryptonian cousin, Superman. Gunn elaborated onWoman of Tomorrow(perDeadline):

“We see the difference between Superman,who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant,versus Supergirl,who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton — andwatched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible waysfor the first 14 years of her life. And then came to Earth when she was a young girl.She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Supergirl first appears in the pages ofAction ComicsNo. 252 (1959). The character found its way to The CW in 2007, portrayed first by Laura Vandervoort as a series regular during Season 7 ofSmallville.Vandervoort reprised the role once in Season 8 and as a recurring guest star in Season 10.
