For the past couple of weeks, it’s beenCaptain Marvel’s time to shine at the box office. In its second frame, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe pulled in a very impressive $67.9 million last weekend. While the comic book adaptation will do quite well in its third weekend, it will be Jordan Peele’sUsthat takes home the box office crown as the highly-anticipated horror movie looks to have a huge debut.
Ushas been earning rave reviews (for the most part) ever since its debut at SXSW. Up until very recently, it was sitting at a perfect 100 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This serves as Jordan Peele’s sophomore directorial effort and his follow-up to the acclaimed, Oscar-winningGet Out. As such, expectation and anticipation is very high. That will drive it to an opening weekendbox officebetween $38 and $45 million. Though, some analysts believe it can cross the $50 million mark, which would be truly huge.
Get Out, for the sake of comparison, opened with $33 million in 2017. It went on to gross $255 million worldwide, working from a budget of less than $5 million.Uscomes with a larger price tag, around $20 million. Even so, a start of $40 million or more would ensure that this one will be a major hit for Universal. The key will be whether or not audiences respond as well as critics have so far, or if there will be a noticeable gap between more casual moviegoers and the critical community. That could hurt its long-term earning potential.
Meanwhile,Captain Marvel, which stars Brie Larson as the titular hero, should see between $30 and $40 million in its third weekend, depending on how steep the drop off is. As of this writing, it’s already earned $797 million worldwide, well on its way to crossing the $1 billion mark. This bodes very well forAvengers: Endgamenext month, which will prominently feature Larson’s Carol Danvers, alongside the rest of the Marvel heroes who were decimated by Thanos' finger snap.
Wonder Park($8 to $10 million),Five Feet Apart($6 to $8 million) andHow to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World($5 to $6 million) should round out the top five. Looking ahead to next weekend, Disney has Tim Burton’s live-actionDumboon the way, which should put the Mouse House on top once again.
