Tonight is the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, where musicians go head-to-head for a coveted prize. Before the official ceremony, some winners have already been announced. One such winner is talented actressViola Davis. Davis is now the eighteenth person to have earned an EGOT.
An EGOT is when an entertainer wins an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. Viola Davis won two Tonys in 2001 and 2010. She would then earn a Primetime Emmy forHow to Get Away with Murderin 2015, an Academy Award forFencesin 2017, and finally, a Grammy for her memoir audiobookFinding Me.

This Grammy is the first for the 57-year-old actress who firststarted in the 80s with theater. Her first on-screen credit wasn’t until 1996 when she was in several TV shows such as NYPD Blue.

“It has just been such a journey," Davis said while accepting the award. “I just EGOT!”
She then goes on to say, “I think that everybody wants their life to mean something,” she said. “I believe in the Cherokee birth blessing, which is, ‘May you live long enough to know why you were born.’ I do believe that you literally wanna blow a hole through this world in whatever way you can.”
“A lot of people don’t know how to do that. A lot of people haven’t found that thing that they’re passionate about, that they can do. Some have. But we all are looking for that, blowing a hole through this earth before we leave it. I think about that in my work a lot. I really found that thing that I love to do. So I always wanna make it meaningful.”
Viola Davis most definitely deserves such a prestigious honor. She has been in the entertainment industry for decades, and with all of her hard work and perseverance, she earned a series of awards that only the most dedicated thespians dream of.
Davis has a full plate ahead of her as she has the filmsAirandThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,both coming out this year. She is also set to star in DC’sWaller,where she is also executive producer. Davis is an inspiration, especially for African-Americans across the country who seek a career in entertainment. In fact, she is the most awarded African-American at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
