The actor had hinted multiple times before the release of the last installment andInfinity Warthat he was preparing to leave. Robert Downey Jr. echoed the same sentiment in that both actors wanted to leave the party on their own before being asked to leave. In a new interview,Endgamescreenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely reveal that they don’t think it would be wise to bring Evans back into the fold.
Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely started writing for the Steve Rogers character back in 2011 withCaptain America: The First Avenger. Since then, they have been a part of nearly everything that the character has been in on the big screen, includingCivil War,Winter Soldier,Infinity War, andAvengers: Endgame. When asked about a possible return to the MCU, Markus had this to say aboutChris Evansnever returning.
“I love writing for Cap, I love Evans. But I really feel, much like Tony, we got them to a place where they don’t need to do it anymore. I’d hate to gin up something hokey to get them back.”
MCU fans already miss Chris Evans as Cap and would be thrilled to see him return in some capacity. However, it doesn’t look like that will be the case, at least with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely still writing for Marvel Studios.Avengers: Endgameplayed with time travel and brought closure to a lot of storylines, including Cap’s. Bringing him back could hurt all the good that the movie accomplished. McFeely explains.
“I do worry that if they do stuff like that, it’ll dingEndgamein the rearview mirror. This is such an important and such an interesting moment in movies, because a very successful studio just put their tools down.”
Chris Evans is now experiencing life outside of the MCU. He’ll be seen next on the big screen inRian Johnson’s Knives Out. While there are a lot of potential storylines open for Steve Rogers in the MCU during the time travel ofAvengers: Endgame, it doesn’t look like it will happen. Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, and Evans all seem to be on the same page about this subject. With that being said, it doesn’t mean that it couldn’t happen at some point in the future.
Marvel Studios is branching out and getting away from themain Avengers storylinewith new characters. We have theEternalsmovie on the way,Fantastic Four,X-Men,Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and a lot more, which will shift the focus. We also have the standaloneBlack Widowmovie andThor: Love and Thunderthat will bring back some of the original members. Natasha Romanoff so the end of the line inAvengers: Endgame, so her story takes place in the past, which is something that could easily happen with Steve Rogers.
