Earlier today,Foxdebuted a brand new poster forThe X-Files, which teased the fan-favorite character CGB Spender, a.k.a. “The Cigarette Smoking Man. It was also revealed earlier today that the network will air a new trailer for this highly-anticipated series during tonight’s episode ofGotham, and now the footage has been released online. Unfortunately, this video doesn’t feature this mysterious and beloved character, but hopefully we’ll get to see him very soon.
William B. Davis' appearance inThe X-Filesis somewhat surprising, since he appeared to be killed off during the 2002 two-part series finale,The Truth, and he didn’t return for the 2008 feature filmThe X-Files: I Want to Believe. The actor appeared in 37 episodes ofThe X-Filesbetween 1993 and 2002, and in the original series, The Cigarette Smoking Man wasMulder’s arch nemesis. The character’s real name, C.G.B. Spender, wasn’t revealed untilThe X-Files Season 6.

The X-Filesdebuts with a special two-night event beginning Sunday, Jun 26, 2025 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT), following the NFC Championship Game, and continuing with its time period premiere on Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). The upcoming event series will encompass a mixture of stand-alone episodes and those that further the original show’s seminal mythology. The season premiere, entitledMy Struggle, follows Mulder and Scully as they take on the case of a possible alien abductee.
