Zack Snyder’s time working on his DC Universe was relatively short, but in four years he created a franchise that is both vehemently defended and critically slammed in equal measure. However, for Snyder, the extreme reactions to what became a trilogy of movies –Man of Steel,Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, andZack Snyder’s Justice League– are something he cannot really explain.
In the new edition ofEmpiremagazine, Snyder sat down to answer several fan questions, including many centered on his time as the driving force behind the DC franchise. When asked why his movies have drawn such different reactions from fans, the director said:

“I don’t know. It’s a good question. There’s a percentage of the fandom that does not like the deconstructivist approach that I take, where I test the mythology. I think that makes some of the fans mad. But basically what it says is that your hero is worthy. I always feel like the movies I made, in the end, though they may test that notion, they confirm your suspicions about their hero status. You might have to go on a bit of a journey to get there.”
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
He also addressed the reason so many fans are worked up by hisBatman and Superman actually killing peoplein his movies. Asked whether it surprised him that feathers were ruffled by the violent nature of his movies, he said:
“No. The only reason I’m not surprised is that some people got brainwashed by a bunch of material that’s no consistent with true canon. And that’s fine. They’re on their own journey.”

Zack Snyder Would Include Two Unexpected Versions of Batman and Superman in a Remake
Although there is very little chance of Snyder returning to the DC franchise now, he was asked which former stars of the franchise he would use if he were to remakeBatman v Superman. While his choice for Superman was perhaps not a surprise, he did not choose a big screen Batman as his Dark Knight.
“That’s hilarious. That’s a crazy question. I’d have to go for probably Christopher Reeve’s Superman. And Adam West for Batman. He’s probably the closest to my Batman. Does he get to wear my costume? Can he take my direction? Then he’s going to be fine.”

Currently, Snyder is as far away as he could be from ever returning to the DC franchise for a number of reasons. Snyder’s focus right now is on hisRebel Moonproject, which is about to release its second part on Netflix on April 19. In addition to this, he also hashis R-rated versions of bothRebel Moonmoviescoming later this year, and there is still talk of more from hisArmy of the Deadfranchise and many other projects on his slate.
Zack Snyder Explains Strange Reason Batman v Superman was Almost R-rated
Batman v Superman received an R-rated director’s cut, but Zack Snyder revealed why the MPAA wanted the same for the theatrical version.
For the DCU, James Gunn and Peter Safran are now steering the franchise in their own direction – with some Elseworld offshoots driving alongside them – and that will take the characters of Batman, Superman, et al into a very different place to where the Snyderverse ended up.

Zack Snyder’s DC movies can be found streaming on Max.
