Director Zack Snyder has big (arguably too big) plans for his Netflix franchiseRebel Moon. Speaking withEmpire, Snyder has revealed that there are now plans in place forRebel Moonto expand far beyond a mere two movies, with the filmmaker having put together a 450-page ‘bible’ for the series, which both he and the streaming platform hope will extend into prequels, sequels, and TV shows.
“When I pitched it to Netflix, the scale was a thing they wanted. They were like, ‘Well, how big could it be? How many movies?’ That made me go, ‘Okay, if we really do this, we can sink our teeth pretty deep into this. We can’t really hit the bottom.’”
Snyder’sRebel Moonreportedly contains all manner of backstories and other lore, with the timeline for the saga taking the story far and wide into both the past and the future. Snyder hopes to see much of this make its way to screen, with plans now in place for a television series that will explore the life and times of Fra Fee’s character Regent Balisarius, the tyrannical ruler of the oppressive government, the Imperium.

“The Rebel Moon is not the moon that they’re on. The title was conceptual, but there’s a planet named Vanna, and Vanna is the rebel moon. It’s not even in one shot of this movie!”

Rebel Moon Is Due to Land on Netflix in December
Directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, the filmmaker’sRebel Moonsaga will begin later this year, with the first installmentdue to land on Netflix in December.
“In a universe controlled by the corrupt government of the Mother World, the moon of Veldt is threatened by the forces of the Imperium, the army of the Mother World controlled by Regent Balisarius,” the official synopsis forRebel Moonreads. “Kora, a former member of the Imperium who seeks redemption for her past in the leadership of the oppressive government, tasks herself to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to make a stand against the Mother World’s forces before they return to the planet.”
Rebel Moonwill be led byThe MummystarSofia Boutella as Kora, with the rest of the cast made up ofThe Gentlemenstar Charlie Hunnam,Justice League’sRay Fisher, andGladiatorstar Djimon Hounsou. Additionally, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Cary Elwes, Stuart Martin, Alfonso Herrera, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, and Anthony Hopkins will also feature.
Rebel Moonis scheduled to be released on July 30, 2025, by Netflix, with a limited theatrical release also being planned. A follow-up,Rebel Moon Part 2, has already been confirmed, with the main series being planned as a trilogy.
